Extremis Diabolus

The story so far (Part 1)

Humble beginnings.

The acolytes regain conciousness entombed in a metal structure, the sounds of heavy machinary pressing in from all sides. None remembers how they came to be there, although memories of bright lights and the sounds of klaxxons emerge from the murky depths of their minds. One amongst them, Nihilious the resourceful Mechanicus opens the door and allows them entry to the wider complex. Outside the doors the heavy machinary noises continue as they make their way into the bowels of a Manufactorum.

Finally making their way to an exit, they track their way to a vehicle and make for a nearby cluster of other buildings in an abandoned truck. En route they come under small arms fire and the truck rendered a useless heap of plasteel. Valiantly returning fire, they overcome the opressors (largely thanks to the efforts of Morias ‘Pistol’ Novia) and proceed to investigate. The acolytes discover a cluster of sinister cultists, seemingly bent on preventing them from investigating the surroundings any further.

Shortly thereafter a small drop ship bearing the insignia of the Imperial Navy drops from orbit and lands on the nearby landing pad. Communication ensues with Sergeant Lukas Banndark where the nature of their mission here comes to light; investigate the heretical activities.

After a short investigation in town leads them back to the very manufactorums from which they had originally came, they locate and kill the presumed leader of the local cell. In the process they might up with 2 of their future allies, a local underworld figure and an Imperial guardsman taken hostage.

Further investigation into the local city turns up mysterious communications devices and some small monetary rewards. Upon reporting their findings the Acolyte group is taken to the Imperial vessel Orion’s Wrath which proceeds to use lance batteries to decimate the city and its surrounds.

- gang later attacks the group as they make their way to the central transport hub, meet Officer Scott

Hiveworld: Going Up And Elsewhere

The group ran into the elevator, out of breath from their near death escape from the hordes of infected. Nihilious jumped in shock as sparks suddenly blew from the console, and the doors closed. The lights flickered for a second, and suddenly the elevator was lit by the warm glow of its primary lighting. The party checked the chronoscopes, and were shocked to discover the time and date was the exact moment which the incident had started. However, of the attendant there was no sign. The group argued as the elevator made its way up, attemtping to make sense of the madness they had endured- they had used ammo and supplies, and they were still wounded from their encounter. However, the argument was cut off by the elevator arriving at its destination.

Wary of their previous danger the party emerged cautiously, the floor engulfed in darkness. The creatures howled, and shifted in the darkness. The creatures let off a piercing howl, paralyzing the group and rushing them. Just as the creatures were upon them, ready to tear them limb from limb they vanished, leaving the party standing the the elevator lobby, everyone around them going about their buisness as if nothing were wrong.

Surprised by the unusual appearance of the group security approached them and asked them to stand down and holster their weapons. The shock of the incident was too much for some (can’t remember who else freaked out), but it was Faggen that responded the worst. Screaming and howling he collapsed to the floor, defecating himself before crawling back into the elevator and throwing up. The group unsure of what was happening surrendered, and managed to relive faggen of his weapon before he shot someone in his episode

The security team was unsure of what was wrong with the group but decided to take them back to the station and question them, such suspicious and wild behavior was uncommon on the relatively civil floor of 1340. The group was stripped of their weapons and supplies and taken in the hold pen of a van and driven back. During this drive, the party was able to recover, Faggen regaining conciousness, alert and ready to move, but still shaken by his episode, and in need of a fresh pair of pants. While the group was traveling, the holding van and the van holding the groups weapons crashed, flipping over, stunning and injuring some members of the party as they slammed against the walls of the van.

The shock of the crash was sufficient to bend the door of van open, allowing the group to crawl out. They were greeted by a deserted and derelict street, a strange sight considering the good condition of the streets they saw as they were escorted to the van. The group was attacked by a hobo, who attacked them with a pipe before the group swarmed him and accidently beat him to death, rather than subduing him. Faggen found a police revolver and used it to blow the door of the van containing their equipment- strangely the van was empty of weapons and looked to be the hobo’s home, lived in for many years by the looks and smell of it.

The party barely had time to digest this information before their surroundings suddenly shifted again, reverting them back to the clean streets they had seen before. They were standing in the middle of the road, both crashed vans lying close by with no sign of the hobo or the police who had driven the vans and escorted them. They were swiftly challenged by a new group of riot police who had heard the crash and came to investigate. Faggen attempted to hide his newly acquired weapon but it fell with a clunk as they surrendered. The group was held under gunpoint for nearly an hour as the police attempted to make sense of what had happened.

Officer Scott arrived from the lower levels, called up due to his run ins with our group, in the hope he might be able to help with the investigation. He had just barely began to question us when one of the officers began violently convulsing, dropping his weapon and letting out a piercing shriek before his torso was ripped apart from within and a demonic creature emerged, wrapped in the man’s innards and warp energy before screeching at the party.

Hiveworld: Into the Darkness
grim, dark etc.

The band paused for a moment, collecting their thoughts, bandaging their wounds and servicing their overworked weapons. The Guardsmen although taking the death of their commander in stride muttered amongst themselves as to fate awaited them. In front of them, terrifying horrors, the likes of which none of them could have imagined even in their darkest dreams. Behind them a seemingly bloodthirsty leader from the Adeptus Arbites with the power of the inquisition behind him and his band.
Meanwhile, back inside the dropship, the band of jumped up vagabonds, ‘soldiers for the inquisition’ they called themselves, pored over a bloodstained map, taken from the body of the sergeant. Zarkov slammed his fist on the table in frustration. “Of course I dont understand how your damn warp works Lupus, I just expected, well hoped you would have been able to determine where the source of the corruption stemmed from. Can you at least assure me that its not coming from near the elevators?”
Lupus resisting the urge to put his face in his hands in despair calmly tried to explain for a third time how inaccurate and dangerous looking into the warp to try to triangulate a source of corruption as powerful as what they had witnessed. The first time he had tried it, terrible images and feelings had flooded his mind, trying to corrupt his very soul had poured through the opening that he had made. Lupus had not been prepared for the unfiltered power flowing through the warp and had collapsed in a gibbering heap.
After much argument, Lupus felt that he had done his best to make Zarkov understand how dangerous it was to gaze into the warp. The party looked at each other and paused weighing their options. It was Pistol the shifty assassin who spoke first. "Okay, we understand that the warp here holds a terrible power and you might not be able to detect the precise direction of the corruption, but I know that if we go to the elevators, our only other lead, the terrible things that we would have to face there would surely be the end for all of us.
The party nodded in agreement to the sentiment and it was decided, the party would trek down south towards the Riot Police zone, through Throatslit territory and attempt to triangulate from there, the source of the corruption. And, as Scumlord pointed out (All barring the silent Techpriest had forgotten his true name) if there happened to be any heavy weapons or armor they could salvage from the riot police, it would help them out tremendously.

The party began to trek south, leaving the apparent security of the dropship and delving deeper into the residential district. Carnage littered the streets: limbs, gibs and unidentifiable body parts were casually strewn outside the terraced housing. The were tearing marks on these bodies, and as they passed by, several of the guardsmen looked away, not being able to think about the despicable carnage that had befallen these civilians.
Upon rounding a corner, the group came upon two of the abominations feeding on some of their spoils. Zarkov stumbled, alerting the horrors, they immediately leapt up, limbs twisting at unhuman angles. Their heads spewing fireballs into the group of guardsmen, incinerating one of the instantly and par-cooking another. The party, aghast at the sight before them, were stunned. Two unspeakable horrors, human entrails still hanging out of their mouths and blood smeared across their oddly coloured flesh. The two monsters took this opportunity to leap into combat, lashing out and biting those nearby. The guardsmen and the band snapped out of their stupor firing into the creatures, one of the creatures had one of its heads blown off by a point blank pistol shot, the other, seeing it was now alone, let out a terrible wail that seemed to pull at the very fabric of reality. Upon experiencing this terrible corruption , much of the party were unable to cope and passed out. Pistol seeing his companions fall to the floor around him rolled away from the abomination, came to one knee and fired off two quick rounds at the creature, forcing it to retreat into the warp from whence it came.

After a few minutes, the party had come back to consciousness and they pressed on towards Riot Police territory. Upon nearing the border, one of the forward scouts screamed out over comms and shots were heard echoing through the apparently empty streets. Zarkov and Castila went up the alley the scout had last been seen in, just as they came to the end, Zarkov stumbled over a barrel which he and Castila then took cover behind. In front of them, now fully aware of their presence was an abomination, similar to the ones they had fought earlier, feasting on the body of the scout. It turned its head towards them, unleashing a blast of fire. The barrel provided good cover for the both of them, only singeing their armor. Zarkov pulled out his Autogun, laying down a field of suppressing fire whilst Castila barked out over his comms unit that they were in direct contact with hostiles and required immediate backup. The terrible creature lurched towards them slowly taking the occasionale bullet from the two in cover. Just as it was almost upon them, Pistol rounded the corner, firing wildly with both pistols. The creature enraged that its prey had assistance let out a bloodcurdling yell, so terrifying that many of the reinforcements and Zarkov could do nothing but fall to the floor, their hands over their ears, praying for death to come or for the noise to stop. Pistol, resilient as always was not swayed by the beasts terrible shriek unloaded more rounds into the creatures chest, turning what was a torso into a bloody sponge.

The party slowly recovered and for the first time, took note of their surroundings only to realise that they were on the edge of Riot Police Territory. Ahead would surely be safety, a place to rest and maybe even some supplies….

The Long Arm of the Law

The party considered what their options were. There was some talk about boarding the bridge but Zarkov rapidly dismissed this lunacy. The safest course it was decided was to descend into the bowels of the ship and move towards the engines or power supply, disabling them and hence crippling the ship.
Nihilious Metallus Novus was able to get some old schematics of the ship to guide the party. As they descended through the decks they came across a band of ’shiners who they quickly dispatched, with Lupus narrowly avoiding a crippling injury.
Nihilious Metallus Novus maps were of limited use as they were outdate, but eventually the party found a tech section and Nihilious Metallus Novus was able to bluff his way past the servitors, gaining valuable information about some of the ships core systems along the way.

The party continued on towards the engine rooms. They came across a technician who the dispatched and eventually came to the ships engine systems. The area was heavily guarded but thankfully the guards were caught flatfooted. Morias ‘Pistol’ Novia pumped round after round into the guards. Limbs were blown clean from their bodies and the technicians began to panic. The guards were no pushover and fought back valiantly, several rounds of flechettes were pumped into Zarkov After receiving one too many rounds, Lupus snapped, letting a might arc of lightning fire from his fingers. The warp drive interfered with the blast, causing it to jump from the soldiers and onto the power generators.

The power cut off in the ship, plunging the party into total darkness before the emergency lighting system flashed on. Nihilious Metallus Novus quickly jumped onto a terminal, checking what systems were down. Only the life support, and secondary weapons remained online. The ship was (for now at least) disabled. A desperate scheme was hatched. Alloric had some shaped charges on his person, with instruction from Nihilious , they were placed in critical locations along the power supply and main engines. The timers set to go off in seven minutes.
Sprinting down the hall towards the lifeboats, the party mowed down anyone they saw be they civilians or enemy combatants. They had all sinned in the eyes of the emperor and justice was served.
They reached the lifeboats with only moments to spare. As the lifeboats jettisoned from the ship, a massive explosion was seen to ripple through the core of the ship.
The party contemplated their fate as their fragile lifeboat drifted through the darkness of space. All that was left to do was to activate their distress beacon and pray. Lupus knew better than any of them that space was vast, empty and completely unforgiving.

Under the Eye of Terra

The party, weakened after many days of grueling combat against foul demons take a moment to rest aboard the shuttle on their way back to Orions Fury. Whilst most of the party nursed their wounds or polished their guns, Faggen (Scumlord) Paced back and forth across the tiny cabin of the shuttle, stopping occasionally to glance out the small plas-glass window. Outside he could see Orions Fury, bathed in the reflective glow of the planet below. The sight failed to give him any comfort, the giant ship was a ship full of Guardsmen, full of eyes that scrutinised his every move he knew he would need to be careful in a ship full of police, informants… His paranoid delusions were interrupted by a giant shadow passing across the local sun.
ATTACK! ATTACK! THEY FOUND US ALREADY! THEY HAVE A HUGE BATTLECRUISER!!” he screamed to all around him. The pilot of the transport turned around in his seat, grinning. Calm down fool. That is the Sword of Terra! A noble ship of the Imperium. Sadly Faggen (Scumlord) was too far gone to notice and his friend Nihilious Metallus Novus was anesthetized and unable to calm him.

After some time they landed aboard the Orions fury, debriefed with Sergeant Lukas Banndark and rested in their quarters. After only a few hours rest, klaxons sounded , waking the squad from a well earned rest. Grabbing what small amount of gear they had around them, they moved swiftly to Sergeant Lukas Banndark s quarters only to discover several humanoid figures with black helmeted suits and some strange las carbines. After dispatching these and discovering that they were in fact human and that the guns appeared to be inoperative they met up with Sergeant Lukas Banndark who informed them that three sets of insertion vehicles had landed on Orions Fury. They had been launched from a Xeno vessel that appeared to have advanced stealth drives.
After the attack had been repelled, the unknown vessel disengaged from the battle and entered the warp.

The party investigated the insertion vehicles and ascertained that although the identity of these vehicles had been obscured, some of the identifying serial numbers remained.
The Orions Fury, having sustained much damage in the battle, docked with its mothership, The Sword of Terra. Lupus Nihilious Metallus Novus and Zarkov boarded the Sword of Terra, looking for any information about the boarding party and the ship that birthed it. Nihilious Metallus Novus investigated the Techpriests aboard the ship uncovering some interesting information. The Cyberseer was on mars at the time of the dropship being built a mere 400 years ago. The Cyberseer knew more but would not divulge the information. Meanwhile Zarkov used his investigative skills to pour through the ships Library and discovered the book that had details of the dropships creation however the book ‘Mars Ships Log Vol XIV, Copy MIX’ had the vital page missing.
Most fruitful of all was Lupus efforts. He pressed the Astropaths for details about recent warp activity and was able to discern the direction that the Unknown vessel had gone towards.
The squad debriefed with Sergeant Lukas Banndark and checked the Astral maps. There was one clear location that the ship would be heading towards.. a desolate mining and repair station orbiting a gas giant only a few AU from their current location.
A course was set for The Star Arbite.
